Establishment
It is located on the eastern edge of the Pacific slope of the Cordillera de Talamanca, in the second District Cato of Coto Brus in the province of Puntarenas.
Established by Decree Law No 6 638, published in the Gazette on 30 September 1981, with an area of 10000 hectares. Subsequently, by Decree No. 13225-A February 22, 1982 the original area was expanded to 19,602 hectares.
Among the most important objectives were taken into account for the protection of this area are:
- The interest of protecting animal and plant species found in this area.
- The need to preserve watersheds stop the use of hydroelectric power can be generated in that area because of its steep topography.
- The importance of learning as a gene bank of forest species.
Life Zones
They recognize some areas of life, among which are: premontane wet forest, lower montane wet forest, lower montane rain forest, montane rain forest.
This area is drained from east to west by the river Coton and has a drainage network formed by the rivers Cedro, Twins, Cotito, Hammock, Surayj and Bellavista, which flow north-south tributaries join the Coton in right bank. The abruptness of the line prevents the formation of Coton in its left bank tributaries. The flora include: avocado, amarillón bell candelillo, sweet cedar, match, parrot cypress, oak, sphagnum, golden fruit, anger rose, mary, strawberry tree, quinine, Quizarrá, copey oak, oak Irazu, Boruca oak, Tirrá. Logs are also loaded with epiphytes, mosses and bromeliads.
The fauna is diverse, there are: armadillo, armed buzzard, white-faced, mountain goat, rabbit, moose, Ceibita, ocelot, jaguar, puma, caucel lion jaguarundi, ocelot, raccoon, hammers, howler monkey, spider monkey , monkey-faced, otter or water dog, porcupine, coati, sloth two fingers, three fingers lazy, tayras, peccaries, deer, skunks stinking.
